“Keep demonstrations peaceful. In the words of John Lennon, “When it gets down to having to use violence, then you are playing the system’s game. The establishment will irritate you – pull your beard, flick your face – to make you fight! Because once they’ve got you violent, then they know how to handle you. The only thing they don’t know how to handle is non-violence and humor.” – Bernice A. King (daughter of Martin Luther King, Jr.)
I am a big proponent of non-violent protesting. One of the biggest benefits is it will allow you (the protestor) to be victimized in confrontation. If you (or we) become violent (even in language) it gives them (the opposition) the option to claim that we started and participated in a violent situation. Correct, being non-violent doesn’t keep them from claiming we were, but it is an outright lie. History, even in short context is real good about revealing lies. Be on the right side of history.
